Extra Time Understanding Math

A simple way to get in a few extra minutes to practice math facts is to use the MUTE button on your television set during every commercial when you are watching TV at night.

When the commercial begins, turn around so they cannot see the TV. Use flash cards to practice as many facts as you can before the program you are watching starts again.

When the program begins again, turn around and watch until the next commercial. By the end of a half hour program you will have had about nine minutes to work on your facts.

(Did you notice that MUTE spelled backwards stands for Extra Time Understanding Math)

READING
The second and third grade reading curriculums will be supplemented with the Read Naturally Program. Studies show that repeated reading is the key to developing fluency, the ability to read as well as we speak without having to think about each word. Using Read Naturally, students practice reading stories with a timer until they reach a pre-determined goal rate of fluency, accuracy, speed, and vocal expression. On Mondays students are asked to read a short informational passage. Then the students are asked to practice reading the story with an adult at home each evening. On Friday the students read the passage again. Then they graph their initial and final scores. The graphs show the students’ progress over successive stories, which provides positive reinforcement, boosting their confidence and motivating them to continue reading

Please take the time to help your student practice each evening. It shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes and may be counted as part of the monthly grade level reading minutes.
