NATIONAL BULLYING AWARENESS WEEK
October 4th-10th, 2009 is National Bullying Awareness Week. This week was started 4 years ago by the PACER foundation to bring awareness to the issue of bullying. It was also began with hopes to empower young people to do something about bullying. It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day out of fear (National Education Association, 1995). Bullying is the most common form of violence; it is estimated that 3.7 million youth engage in bullying while 3.2 million are victims. Direct, physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school, and declines in high school. Verbal abuse remains constant throught out the years.

What Every Kid Needs to Know about Bullying
Bullying is never okay! It can happen anyplace- on the playground, on the bus, in the hallways, in the bathroom. Bullying can be lots of things. It is hitting, pushing, name calling, threatening, teasing, sending mean e-mails, taking or ruining another person's things, leaving someone out- and lots of other nasty stuff that's done on purpose to hurt someone.
Bullying is not cool and it's not fair. NO ONE DESERVES TO BE BULLIED

SPEAK UP When someone is willing to say they think something is wrong, they can make a difference. When you see bullying- tell a grownup.
REACH OUT Tell the kid who is bullied that they don't deserve to be treated that way. Ask your friends to join you in being a kid against bullying.
BE A FRIEND Invite the kid who is being bullied to play with you. Create a "bully-free" zone where everyone is welcome.
