News Notes from Mrs. Schrom
February 26, 2010

The kids are excited to have their Flat Stanleys sent off in the mail. We hope they enjoy their vacations with their host family. We can’t wait to hear about their travels! It is Read Across America week next week and I wanted to tell you about our activities so that you could enjoy them too!

Read Across America!
Read Across America is a nationwide campaign to motivate children to read. It is the biggest literacy celebration in the United States. Read Across America not only celebrates the joys of reading, but also honors Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel), whose 106th birthday falls on March 2nd. The Cat in the Hat is 53 years old!
We will begin our Read Across America celebration Monday, March 1st. This year the theme is Grab Your Hat and Read with the Cat! Each morning there will be a guest reader during our morning announcements. There will be a contest to see which class can guess the mystery voice and the book. We will try to guess the identity of the guest reader. The suspense will be thick!
On Tuesday, March 2 at 8:00 am, there will be an ALL SCHOOL READ-IN. Your child is invited to bring in their favorite book to read! The Cat in the Hat will be in the school to make sure everyone is reading!

We have planned an Oak Hill spirit week around Dr. Seuss books:
Monday Socks on Fox by Dr. Seuss. Wear your craziest socks to school!
Tuesday: Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. Wear any striped outfit like the Cat in the Hat.
Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday by Theo. LeSeig (aka Dr. Seuss) Dress in your wackiest outfit
Thursday: The Grinch Who Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. Wear your Cindy Lou Who pajamas and your craziest Who-ville hair.
Friday: The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins by Dr. Seuss. Donate .50 to wear your hat all day. Donations will go to the fundraiser Hats for Haiti. Also, wear your Oak Hill Spirit wear.
Dental Health
Our school nurse, Martha Christensen, talked with our first graders this week about taking good care of their teeth, brushing, flossing and making healthy food choices. We hope to see this talk carry over into their daily routine. Thank you Nurse Martha!

Mid-Winter Break March 6 – 14th Enjoy your families!!
