First Grade - Westwood

A Peek at the Week
Greetings from First Grade!
First grade is fantastic. How’s that for an opening? I can’t say enough good things about these wonderful children. You can be so proud of them. I know the children have been trying hard to follow all the rules that we have established so that we can have a safe and caring environment here at Westwood. I continue to remind the children that we have rules so that we will all be safe and well cared for. You, the parents, have entrusted your child(ren) to us at school, and I take that job very seriously.

These first few week of school are spent teaching social skills, modeling them and practicing them. We have been busy learning all kinds of new things. Knowing the rules, procedures and expectations are so important to the learning environment. We’re well on our way and will continue along that road for another week or two. Of course, social skills are really ongoing all year long!

We will have a week of review next week. I plan to begin our guided reading groups as well. Remember, one of the best gifts you can give your child is your time and attention while reading a really good book. In another week or so, I am planning to begin reading “chapter” books with the class. It should be fun to predict and ponder what will happen next as we go from chapter to chapter.

I have included my daily schedule with the newsletter. You may want to save it in the event you would like to visit school or come to have lunch with your child. In case you haven’t checked out my web page, the daily schedule is located there as well.
Beginning next week, I will send out paper copies of the newsletter only to those parents who indicated they need a paper copy, otherwise, you can find it on my web page.

Our “Westwood Welcome Back Night” is Monday, September 27th from 5:30 to 6:30. I will be speaking about first grade at two different times that evening. Those times are at 5:45 until 6:00 and again from 6:15 until 6:30. I hope to see you there!

The children took their first MAP reading test on Monday. They followed the testing directions very well. I was so proud of them. On Monday, Sept. 27th, they will be taking the math portion and I expect them to do equally well with that one. This is the first year that first graders have taken this computerized test and I look forward to sharing the data when we meet for your child’s conference in October.

BOOK ORDERS
Please see the reminder in your child’s Friday Folder about the book order.. Last day to order books at this time is Thursday, September 30th. You may order online or you may send the paper order form to school with your child.

School pictures will be taken on Friday, October 1. You can find the information and order form in the folder. Thank you!!

Friday Folders
Parents, please be aware that your child will be bringing home a red folder marked "FRIDAY FOLDER" in his/her backpack on Fridays or the last day of school for the week. This red folder will contain your child's homework and any mail or information from Westwood. Please be sure to return it on Monday or the next school day. I reuse them each week. Thanks!
