First Grade News
Greetings from First Grade!
March 4, 2010

Next week we do not have school. We are off all next week to enjoy our spring break. School will be back in session on Monday, March 15th. I hope you and your family can find time to do something you enjoy. My week will be pretty low key and relaxing-no big vacation for me this year.

When we return on March 15th we will be reading a new story called There’s an Alligator Under My Bed. Skills covered during this selection are story structure, summarizing and noting details. As we work on writing during the week, we will begin to elaborate using more details as we write with a purpose. We will work on the long vowel sound of i, as well as compound words. Our spelling test includes long vowel i words. I hope your child is able to check out the Spelling City web page to practice his/her spelling words. There is a link on my home page at www.isd742.org. Many parents have told me that their child really enjoys using it as a tool for practicing the spelling words.

In math we will continue working on addition and subtraction, but with two digits, as well as counting mixed coins (very difficult for many students) and we will begin place value. If you have any spare time over the spring break, I would suggest having your child work on coin counting (pennies, nickels and dimes).

I debated sending any homework, but as I had something ready to go, I decided to send one reading worksheet. I will understand if you are traveling, that your child may not have the opportunity to get it done. Typically, children are looking for something to do to occupy travel time, so perhaps take it along and your child can do it in the car or airplane. You will have to decide what works best for your own situation.

Many of you are traveling somewhere warm and sunny. Be sure to soak up some sun for the rest of us staying behind. Come back safe and well rested. Your child will be very busy these last months of first grade. We still have a lot of learning to do.

Friday Folders
Parents, please be aware that your child will be bringing home a red folder marked "FRIDAY FOLDER" in his/her backpack on Fridays or the last day of school for the week. This red folder will contain your child's homework and any mail or information from Westwood. Please be sure to return it on Monday or the next school day. I reuse them each week. Thanks!
