WELCOME TO GRADE 5! Fifth grade is a terrific time in a student’s educational career. This year we predict our students will grow, change, and learn every day. They are discovering their independence and gaining the skills which will help lead to a successful year! I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child. I want to let you know that as a team, which includes you, your child, and myself, we can set and work to meet high expectations and goals. I value the importance of communication and invite you to feel free to visit with me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions. Speaking both as a parent and teacher, your child’s success and growth are my top priorities. Watch for information coming home soon that further explains and details our daily schedule. Information on other fifth grade items will also soon be on the way home! Again, “WELCOME” you to the fifth grade and I look forward to working with you and your child. Upcoming Events * First Day of School Tuesday Sept. 7 * All Forms Due In Friday Sept. 10 The beginning of the school year always brings lots of paperwork and tons of information! Thank you for filling out all the necessary forms and returning them to school. The use of our agenda book will prove to be our greatest tool of communication. This is a daily tool that will help you, your student, and I keep in contact and on track with homework, assignments, etc. SHOW YOUR SPIRIT!! DON’T FORGET TO CHECK OUT THE KENNEDY COLTS SPIRIT WEAR ON SALE NOW!! “Kennedy Colts C.A.R.E.” DAILY AGENDA BOOKS In the fifth grade we use a Daily Agenda Book to record the lessons and/or skills that are addressed in each class throughout the day. Your child is given time to fill in the information of what was covered in class as well as any HOMEWORK that needs to be completed. I do ask that parents view this book on a daily basis and sign them each night. Please have your child show you his/her homework before you sign it. This will allow you to view the lessons and skills we are addressing in class and also to assist your child if needed. Your attention to the Agenda Book gives your child a positive message about your interest in his/her education. |

My Links MATH FACT PRACTICE AAA MATH MAP MATH Analogies I Analogies II Analogies III Analogies IV A WORD OR TWO ABOUT HOMEWORK Your child can become a better student by becoming a responsible “HOMEWORKER.” Homework offers important review and practice away from the classroom. When you help your child become a more independent learner, you are helping him/her get the most from their educational experiences. How Can You Help • Help your child find a special quiet place to study. It may be in the bedroom, basement, or attic-----it doesn’t matter where, as long as he/she can study without being disturbed. • Set a schedule. Have your child work for 30 minutes a day whether homework is assigned or not. A routine will become a habit. (Remember that everyone is to read at least 20 minutes each evening.) • Provide your child with the materials he/she will need to complete daily homework. These should be kept in the study area so time isn’t wasted in locating materials. Materials to have on hand would be: sharpened pencils, paper, pens, markers, crayons, glue, etc. • Help teach your child to keep materials and work organized. • Keep homework in a special folder that can be returned to his/her backpack upon completion. • When your child has difficulty, help him/her without giving answers. Instead, give clues such as: “Reread the third sentence to find your answer.” Show a sample. Ask him/her to explain to you what they are doing. This way you will be able to understand their level of understanding. • Hang samples of your child’s neatest work and explain that homework should meet this same quality. • When studying for a test, create a “fake test” with possible questions. This is a great idea for weekly spelling tests. Remember: A parent’s feelings and attitude about their child’s education are the strongest and most positive influences a child will have on his or her success. |
