Special Education Language Skills - Apollo

Language Skills 11/12
We are pleased to announce the start of the Scholastic READ 180 program in Mrs. Stuckey's
Language Skills classes! This program was designed for students who struggle in the areas of reading, reading comprehension and writing so that they are able to improve those skills not only in the special education setting, but also in the general education setting. The program centers around whole and small group instruction, individual computer instruction, and independent reading. Progress is monitored using the READ 180 computer program. Instruction can be adjusted based on the student's success during a given unit.

Social Thinking 9
The students in Social Thinking 9 are working on a unit on starting friendships. We started by discussing what a friend is: someone who supports you and wants you to be the best you can be. The skill steps involved in this unit are deciding whether you want to start a new friendship with someone and, if yes, choosing words and actions that might make the other person be interested in getting to know you. We have developed lists of positive qualities and interests the students have that would lend themself to social situations and conversations with their peers. We have also discussed the possiblity of people who don't fit the definition of a true friend, a DNEIRF (friend spelled backwards). These people "like" you for what you have, not for who you are.

Study Skills
On the days opposite of Social Thinking, students work on daily assignments and long range projects for classes. At the start of the school year students were given an agenda that included a month at a glance and week at a glance section for each month. Students are required to keep it updated and points are given during study skills class for completed agenda pages. To receive points students are to record daily assignments in the week at a glance and long range assignments in the month at a glance. When assignments/projects are completed a check mark is placed next to that assignment in the agenda. They are also encouraged to include social activities such as dances, birthday parties and sporting events in their agenda to help aide in planning of all activities.
