General Music Teacher - Westwood

Music at Westwood

At Westwood our students, sing, play, create, read and write music. They also listen and respond to it. Through these activities your children will increase their musical knowledge and skills that will help make music more enjoyable for them both now and in the future.

As Don Campbell writes in "The Mozart Effect"
"Quite simply, music is good for you physically,
emotionally, and spiritually. It can strengthen
the mind, unlock the creative spirit, and,
miraculously, even heal the body."

At Westwood, all students receive 50 minutes of music once every four days. This year I am again the only general music teacher meeting with the students. Therefore, I will only be seeing them 4-5 times a month. In addition to general music, fifth graders may choose to join orchestra and continue as members in sixth grade. Our orchestra director is Mrs. Stockinger. Sixth graders may choose to become band members under the direction of Mrs. Earp.

My Musical Background

I have been teaching vocal music in the St.Cloud school district for a total of about twenty eight years. I began my career at Roosevelt Elementary and taught there for about 6 years. I then "retired" for about 9 years to raise our two children and returned to teaching music in 1989 at North Community School for its last year as a grade 5 and 6 school. In 1990 I began teaching fifth and sixth graders at Discovery. I continued teaching there until 1994 when I returned to Roosevelt to teach music to grades K-4. I came to Westwood Elementary in 2003, when Roosevelt was closed as an elementary school, and have enjoyed working with Westwood's wonderful students and staff.
