Language Arts

Our story this week was Julius by Angela Johnson. Julius is a pet pig shipped to a little girl named Maya from her granddaddy in Alaska. Julius makes messes and is disruptive, but Maya teaches him manners. Julius teaches Maya many fun activities like how to eat peanut butter from the jar without getting any on the ceiling. It is a story about love and sharing that assists the children in studying fictional writing. Oral reading fluency and expression continue to be our focus.

Math

This week the children were introduced to the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction (fact families) and continued to practice their basic facts. Through Frames and Arrows routines, we have worked on number sequences and their rules.

Literature

We have been enjoying entertaining stories by Robert Munsch. Mr. Munsch worked in a day-care center and told the children stories to get them to nap. Eventually, he put some of his stories into the written form of books, which our classes can enjoy reading over and over again.

Please remember to have your child study for the spelling test tomorrow!

Field Trip

We enjoyed our visit to the St. John’s Arboretum last week. Through exploration, observation, and fun activities, we learned about various plants and the habitats in which they grow.

Buckthorn Removal on Saturday, October 15!

Please mark your calendars! Volunteers are needed for a Big Woods project on Saturday, October 15th, from 9:00 - until you need to leave (no later than 12:00). We will be removing Buckthorn and cleaning up the hiking trails. Lunch will be served when the work is complete. If you have any questions, please contact Guy Schafer at Oak Hill at 251-7936 or at his home at 253-2434.

Circle Chat

Next weeks Circle Chat topic is:
How do you know if a book is just right for you?

White-Out Day!

Tomorrow, students and staff are encouraged to wear white clothing to represent peace. October is Bully Prevention Month. Our classes will review what it means to be a respectful, responsible citizen in our school and in the community.

Snack

Thank you to those of you who have already sent in your 2nd snack donation. We appreciate receiving them, and the students are enjoying the yummy variety.

Health
The children are being “transported” back to the time of medieval castles and dragons as they learn the basics of good nutrition and the importance of physical activity. Students are enjoying learning about the Five Food groups with the help of Little D the Dragon, Sir Milkford the Scholar, King Henry the Egg, Queen Anna Banana, Princess Peapod, Prince Waffle, and Lady Holly the Cow.
