Special Education/ Social Thinking - Apollo

Social Thinking 10/11
The social thinking class for tenth and eleventh graders has been doing activities on making conversation with peers, including initiating the conversation, maintaining the conversation and keeping it positive. The students have learned how conversing is like fishing and have learned the terms "bait and brag" and "bait and comment." We have practiced identifying each kind of comment and discussed how those comments keep conversations going or kill it. We are starting each class time with a 5-10 minute conversation starter to practice the skills in making small talk.

Social Thinking 12
The social thinking class for twelfth graders has been working on keeping up with all of the daily reminders and deadlines for seniors - ordering caps and gowns, making appointments for senior interviews with their counselors, bringing in money for graduation items, etc. The class also had a guest speaker come in and talk about going on to post-secondary schools. The speaker graduated three years ago and had a lot of good ideas on how to be successful in the post-secondary educational setting. Study Skills
Students are expected to use a planner for study skills class, which meets opposite social thinking class days. Each student was given a planner to use for class. The planners have both daily/weekly pages AND a month-at-a-glance page. This is the best kind of planner for students who struggle with executive function skills. Assignments should be written down on the weekly pages and checked off when completed. Long range assignments should be noted on the month-at-a-glance pages as well as on the daily pages. Students are encouraged to break down long range assignments and record the smaller steps that need to be completed on the weekly pages. Planners are checked every other day during study skills and points are given for recorded information. Encourage your student to check the daily/weekly pages and the month-at-a-glance every night before working on assignments. We also encourage the students to record home events in their planners - events such as birthdays, sporting events, practices, etc. This will encourage good planning and organization on a daily basis.
