Language Skills/Read 180
READING: During the 2010-2011 school year, Language Arts Skills class utilizes the Scholastic Read 180 curriculum which is a researched based software program. As students interact with the software, they will build background knowledge, develop the ability to form mental models, develop and practice word recognition and fluency. The students will also master new vocabulary, develop and apply comprehension strategies, and apply spelling and proofreading skills. The comprehension strategies that appear in the software and rBook are as follows: read for details, sequence of events, main idea and details, summarize, cause and effect, compare and contrast, problem and solution, make inferences, draw conclusions, and story elements. In addition to the software portion of the class, students will learn in a whole class setting, small group direct instruction setting, as well as having independent reading time.
A variety of instruments are used to assess the students in order to identify their most urgent needs including: placement and progress monitoring, curriculum-based assessments, on-going diagnostic assessments, and writing assessments.
WRITING: Currently, the Language Arts Skills class is utilizing the Scholastic Read 180 curriculum. As a part of this research based program, students complete lessons in the rBook (the workbook for the program). Within the workbook, the students encounter numerous writing activities. At the end of each workshop (section), students are able to brainstorm, plan, and write a first draft form of a paragraph. The students will be able to focus on writing specific types of paragraphs such as: descriptive, expository, expository summary, literature response, literature review or critique, narrative, persuasive, poetry, research writing, and functional writing. In addition, students will be working on grammar, usage, and mechanics.
