Early Childhood Special Education Teacher/Occupational Therapist - Roosevelt

Grow and Learn
One of the greatest aspects of being an early childhood special education teacher/occupational therapist is that I have the opportunity to observe many children grow and develop into themselves. My mission is to help them grow into the best "me" that they can be. To do that, focusing on all areas of development is important. Cognitive or pre-academic skills, motor skills, communication skills, social skills, and self-help skills are important foundations for later learning. In addition, developing respect, empathy, and responsibility are also important skills to ready children for school and community living.

Time for Toys
Toys are an integral part of a child's play and ultimately their learning. Luckily, young children are very happy to use every day objects for play materials. Many of us remember a time when a young child preferred to play with the box rather than the toy that was wrapped inside of it. With that in mind, here are some play ideas using a cardboard box:
* Encourage a young child to climb in the box or place them in the box and push them along the floor to mimic a car or boat ride. Provide vehicle sounds for them to imitate.
*Place a large box on its side or cut a large whole in one side of the box. Encourage your young child to roll a ball into the box.
*Place stuffed animals or dolls inside a box. From a crawling, tall kneeling, or standing position, encourage a young child to push the box to give the animals or dolls a ride.
*Wrap several small boxes with brown grocery bags for stacking or building.
*Tape a medium size box shut, then cut out a whole in one side of the box to allow for a child to place their hand inside. Play "what's in the box?" by having the child pull out an object. Encourage your child to say what the object is or, for older children, what it is used for.
