Greetings from Oak Hill,                                February 2, 2012
By the time you read this almost all of our snow will be gone, hard to believe! I’m getting bummed out, new x-country skies and nowhere to go. It has to get better doesn’t it?
The study of fractions is our current focus in math. The children are relating fraction amounts to the size of the whole or ONE and are using fractions to name parts of sets or collections.   We are recognizing and reading fractions and finding equivalent names for fractions. We are also continuing to work with our basic facts. See if you can talk about fractions at home when you eat that cake or cookie or …..
This week in reading we have been working on retelling stories as well as answering questions about what we read. With the retelling we’ve been working on including the characters, setting, important events and working in the problem without saying “the main character is” or the “setting is”. It has been a little challenging to make the retelling flow well in written form but the children are getting better at it. We’ll continue to work on this and you can help at home by having your child retell the stories they read to you at home. We’ve also been reviewing several skills from earlier in the year.
On the back of this letter is a note about a bulletin board we will be creating that goes with our next reading theme. Please check it out and send in some pictures for this activity. Be sure to put your child’s name on the back of the baby pictures and label the people in the other pictures. Thank you in advance for helping with this activity.
Next week’s Circle Chat topic is:
What is your favorite book to read to mom or dad?
We will finish up our Solids and Liquids unit next week. This week we explore mixing liquids with liquids. I will include a few ideas to try at home on the back of this newsletter.
Enjoy the weekend. I’m going to find a park to go hiking in this weekend to take care of my skiing urge.
