(See the ANNOUNCEMENT SECTION about for the details of the competition!) READING: DEVIL"S ARITHMETIC: Currently we just finished an independent study on another historical fiction novel, "The Devil's Arithmetic," by Jane Yolen. This novel is about the Holocaust, and is about a young girl that travels back in time to experience the life of her family members who were in concentration camps during WWII. It's a powerful story that reinforces why we need to remember history, why we need to remember our family stories, our heritage... and to learn from them. I hope you all take time to talk about YOUR MANY STORIES with your children. THEATER OPPORTUNITY: For three weeks in February we had the privilege of having Mrs. Deborah Bendix, a Language Arts/Theater teacher at Apollo High School, with us. She worked with the children in blocks 1 and 2 on a play entitled, The Terezin Promise, about the Holocaust. During this time we enjoyed first-hand experience with the many and varied aspects of theater...acting, lighting, set design and construction, sound, directing, back stage preparations...just to name a few! We traveled to Apollo to participate in after-school rehearsals for two weeks. Our experience culminated on Thursday, February 25th, with the opportunity to PERFORM our play for the entire Oak Hill Sixth Grade Class and any parents who could attend the performance.
