Welcome to First Grade! It's a year of discovering, exploring and experiencing! This is a look at what to expect in the first grade year and some highlights for you to read over. We work very hard on developing a classroom community. Throughout the whole year we do activities that revolve around respect, responsibility and teamwork to develop that community. Read! Read! Read! The first graders will be working so hard on short and long vowel sounds. Learning songs, rhymes and little tricks to help us remember the sounds is helpful. We continue to work on reading strategies and comprehension. During our Guided Reading time small groups of children work with the teacher on using reading strategies to figure out words while working at their individual reading level. We do many, many hands on activities to practice letter sounds, spelling, writing and reading. We also pull in our science and social studies units to fit in with our reading units. The students will be growing plants, working with sand, pebbles and silt and solids and liquids. Also, the children will learn about their world, community, family and many special units. Math First graders use manipulatives and class activities to work with number recognition and to develop number sense. We will be working on telling time, counting money and making patterns, as well as, continually practicing our math facts. The children practice many skills through fun math games and cooperative learning. |
