			Welcome to First Grade! Our classroom family consists of twenty-three friendly, enthusiastic students. Every day we live, laugh, and love learning together. My goal this year is to have every child learn to their fullest potential in all academic areas. I know that with parent input and support this will happen for all of my learners. In addition to this, I want to help the students develop respect, responsibility, empathy, and social awareness in our diverse world. I believe the saying I have outside my door: This room is a magic place ...we are making tomorrow! We fully enjoy our days together. Please visit us if you get the chance. Reading This year we will read, read, read! The more children read and are read to the better readers they will be. I immerse the children in written language through the use of our Houghton-Miflin reading program, guided reading (small groups), literacy centers, poetry folders, phonics instruction, and daily oral language. The magic that is present in the eyes of these emerging readers makes me feel like I have the best job in the world. And...I do!
						Math and other Curriculum Areas We utilize the Everyday Math Program here at Kennedy. The children are taught to problem solve, investigate, and learn basic facts through hands-on manipulatives, games, and cooperative learning. Other topics of study in our other curriculum areas include: Apples and Pumpkins (Harvest), Bears, Communities, Seasons, Plants, Rocks, Solids and Liquids, Families, Sea Life, Safety, Nutrition, Dental Health, Penguins, and many others. I try to integrate what we are reading about with the rest of our curriculum. The children's interests also help me design my lessons.
