The Daily Five and Visiting Us I encourage you to ask your child about The Daily Five in reading class. We have started to utilize a framework for independent work called The Daily Five. So far we have taught students how to Read To Self, Read To Someone, Listen to Someone Read and do Word Work. The last thing we will teach next week will be writing. Students have been doing these things all year but not within the framework of The Daily Five which promotes independence in these areas. While students do The Daily Five teachers are working with small groups of children teaching mini-skill lessons, doing guided reading or conducting learning conferences with individual students. The Daily Five is designed to promote independent learning activities that are known to increase fluency and comprehension in reading and writing. I am very pleased with how well students are doing with The Daily Five framework! Classroom Visits At conferences I tried to remember to invite you to our room for a visit. You are always welcome and your child usually really enjoys having you visit us. Our door is always open and no prior notice is necessary. Just check in at the office and get a visitor tag and come down to see us. When you get to the room just say who you are and tell me you are here to visit. Look at the schedule to see what we doing at certain times of the day. Please be aware that sometimes our schedule changes when we have special programs or events. Those are rare, but they do happen. We hope to see you sometime! Spelling This is our second week of formal spelling instruction. Our spelling will focus on applying vowel patterns in the English Language to writing. Last week students learned about the consonant-vowel-consonant and the consonant-vowel-consonant-silent e patterns. This week students are reviewing CVC and learning about the CVVC patterns in words. The words may appear to be quite simple, but remember it the application of the pattern that we hope to see student practice in their daily writing. In addition to patterned words you will also see three words that do not fit the weekly pattern. We are calling these our All-Star Words. These words don't fit into standard patterns for decoding. At home when you practice the words on the list, have your child think of other words that fit the vowel pattern too. This will help with our goal of applying the pattern to writing. Thank you for your support and cooperation. It is greatly appreciated! |
