Second Grade News

Second Grade News
2-2-12
We look forward to seeing you at conferences soon! J

Math

The study of fractions is our current focus in math. The children are relating fraction amounts to the size of the whole or ONE and are using fractions to name parts of sets or collections.   The second graders are recognizing and reading fractions and finding equivalent names for fractions.

Language Arts

The children have been continuing to read from our Invitations to Literacy program, discussing key concepts and completing comprehension sheets.   The children are working on their Writing Workshop stories and getting ready for our Authors’ Tea in May.   We also have been practicing, practicing, and practicing for our upcoming plays.
We hope you’ll be able to join us for the plays!

Thursday, February 16, 1:00-2:00
Mrs. Bautch’s and Mrs. Slade’s Classes
Friday, February 17, 1:00-2:00
Mrs. Koenig’s and Mrs. Schuver/Reichel’s Classes

If you are unable to make your child’s performance, please talk to his/her teacher. A dress rehearsal will be given for our Kindergarten buddies and first grade classes at another time.

          Circle Chat
Next week’s Circle Chat topic is:

What is a book that you have read that you
would like to turn into a play?

Spelling

An early look at the spelling words for the week of February 6-10:
room        moon        book        soon         look         noon         broom foot              cookie      cartoon    pool          loop          hood        boot
If your child participates in the challenge spelling program, the words for next week are:
angrily     recognize      panicked     lightning  cautiously   creature
 Literature

During literature time, we are reading the Addy books from the American Girl collection. We have finished book one and have begun book two titled Addy Learns a Lesson. In this book, Addy and her mother start their lives as free people in Philadelphia. Addy is learning about reading, writing, friendship, and the cost of freedom.

Book Order

Today your child brought home his/her February Scholastic book order. If you will be making a purchase, please order on-line or return the order form and check by Tuesday, February 8th.

Needed…

We are starting to run low on pencils. If you have extra pencils at home or would like to donate more, it would be greatly appreciated. Ticonderoga is a little more expensive than other pencils but they sharpen very well and are much easier for the children. Thank you!
