American History:
The course concentrates on American History from exploration and colonization to the present. Classes consist of group discussions, movies, power point presentations, textbook readings, etc. The course examines the various themes of history including social, economic, politcal, technology, and cultural history in a chronological format. The course text book is The Americans.

Trimester 1 will focus on American history starting with exploration and colonization and working through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Trimester 2 begins with Westward development through the Great Depression. Trimester 3 will contain World War II through the 1990s.


Requirements of the course:
Students are expected to have as near perfect attendance as possible and actively participate in the learning process. If a student misses class it is his/her responsibility to make up the work as soon as possible. Students should bring to class their textbook, folder, notebook, writing utensil, and required assignments. Students will be expected to complete reading strategies and vocabulary building activiites throughout the course.

Grading procedures:
Students will be assessed on daily work, class participation, unit exams, and a comprehensive vocabulary final. All grades are weighed equally and grades are based on total points. Extra credit will be at the teacher's discretion. The grading scale is as follows:
100-90% A
89-87% B+
86-84% B
83-80% B-
79-77% C+
76-74% C
73-70% C-
69-67% D+
66-64% D
63-60% D-
59-0% F
If a student is at anytime earning below a 60% he/she will automatically be backscheduled on our scheduled IS day. Attendance will then be required. All independent study time must be earned.
