Social Thinking 9 and Social Thinking 10 The ninth grade class is currently working on a Listening Unit. They have learned the six clues that show good listening: 1. Eye contact 2. No interrupting 3. Sit up straight 4. Lean forward 5. Nod head once in a while 6. Ask questions that are on topic The students have also been engaged in some listening games and have had fun demonstrating these skills. The sophomores have been working on a unit titled, "Having a Positive Reputation." This has included discussion on positive thinking, positive comments and a positive attitude. The students are looking at famous people/popular people and examining the characteristics that create a positive reputation. Future classes will focus on using encouraging words, doing acts of kindness, serving others, being sensitive to others, being friendly and helping others. All of these activities will relate back to building a positive reputation. Social Thinking 11/12 The juniors and seniors are currently studying the five transition areas of their IEPs. These include Home and Daily Living, Post-Secondary Training, Recreation and Leisure, Jobs and Job Training and Community Participation. All of the aspects of home and daily living were discussed - doing laundry, making medical appointments, cooking, grocery shopping, etc. In community participation, the students were made aware of driver's education options, public transportation, social security, registering to vote and being involved in clubs/organizations. Jobs and Job Training is the next focus and Ruth Kuhlman, from the Division of Rehabilitative Services will be here on Sept. 29 as a guest speaker in class. |

My Links Social Thinking Syllabus Asperger's and College Prep Overview of Asperger's Syndrome Interesting Facts About ASD An Assignment Checklist for Home Study Skills Students are expected to use a planner for study skills class, which meets opposite social thinking class days. Each student was given a planner to use for class. The planners have both daily/weekly pages AND a month-at-a-glance page. This is the best kind of planner for students who struggle with executive function skills. Assignments should be written down on the weekly pages and checked off when completed. Long range assignments should be noted on the month-at-a-glance pages as well as on the daily pages. Students are encouraged to break down long range assignments and record the smaller steps that need to be completed on the weekly pages. Planners are checked every other day during study skills and points are given for recorded information. Encourage your student to check the daily/weekly pages and the month-at-a-glance every night before working on assignments. We also encourage the students to record home events in their planners - events such as birthdays, sporting events, practices, etc. This will encourage good planning and organization on a daily basis. |
