Homework / Habits
Please ask your son or daughter about their homework and day at school each night. Checking their planners really helps you stay in tune with what they are studying. If you have questions regarding assignments, please call me at school (251-7936, ext. 4706), or email me at debra.hoye@isd742.org.

We really appreciate all of your help and support. Your children are very special and I'm really enjoying getting to know them . They are wonderful!!
If you have questions,
call or email me at school.

Language Arts
Life Books:
Please ask your child to see their "life book." This is a journal that is their treasure chest of thoughts and feelings. It acts like a catalyst for some of their writing.

Reading:
We will be reading many excellent novels this year. You're welcome to read along with us. I bet your child will be eager to tell you about the story they're reading. This is also a great way to discuss life issues with them.

CURRENT UNITS OF STUDY:

BLOCKS 1 and 2:
READING:
We are working on our Adventure Fiction unit, where we read, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. This is a book that grabs you from the first page and keeps your interest to the last page! Gary is a master of descriptive language and inventive and effective writing! Not only are his books fun to read, but his style of writing is invigorating for students to study and emulate. It's a wonderful book to read before our Deep Portage trip.

SPELLING:
Students have a spelling list of 20 words each week. Usually our tests will be on Fridays.
Join them for study sessions on these words! We will also be taking on three sessions of Word Masters this year. We will start round one this fall. We also study SAT words and have biweekly tests on them.

WRITING:
We're currently working on descriptive writing about our autumn trip to the Big Woods and our trip to Deep Portage. We'll be developing a Deep Portage Newspaper with our knowledge and memories of our trip.

INDEPENDENT READING:
Encourage your child to read at least 30 minutes a day at home. If they need suggestions of excellent books to read, have them ask me or Mrs. Hollenkamp. We'll have lots of suggestions!!
