Grade 4 - Oak Hill

Noteworthy News
Here are some Grade 4 Technology Tidbits!
Our class has been using the new interactive white board called the "SMARTBOARD". Thanks to the PTSA for purchasing this wonderful technology to be shared at every grade level! Every Tuesday, your child should be able to come home and share how we used this learning tool in our classroom. Our class has also started keyboarding. The fourth grade typing goal will be 15 words per minute with 80% accuracy or better. (Hands are covered by a cardboard shield...no peeking!)

Classroom Connections
MATH - Our new unit is working with large numbers by studying place value, adding and subtracting, and collecting and representing data. This mastery of number sense is important for building a solid math foundation for future lessons.

LANGUAGE ARTS - We have been learning to be descriptive writers. Susan Marie Swanson,
children's author and poet, spent a very successful week teaching our students how to stretch their writing through poetry. Many of her writing tips will help the students revise their writing during our writers' workshop time. Thanks again, PTSA, for providing this opportunity for our students.

UNIT STUDY - We will take our first Social Studies unit test on Oct. 15th. After that, the Science favorite, Earth Materials, is next. Many students will want to share that favorite rock or mineral from their private collection! Husky Science from SCSU will be back again with a new topic... Mystery Powders. Their visits are always a high point of the day!

OTHER - Thank you for signing the planner every night and supervising your child's independent reading. The first month of AR reading tests went quite well. The students now know their "just right" book levels for October. Keep watching for end of month computer print-outs of AR comprehension scores.
