Linguistics
Linguistics: Language and Society
Grams/Winter 2007-08
Course Overview

Language is powerful; language is power.¨
-Robin Lakoff

Linguistics, in simple terms, is the study of language. Several different fields of linguistics exist: cultural linguistics, dialectology, anthropological linguistics, pragmatics, morphology, semantics, and historical linguistics are just a few of the sub fields of linguistics.

In our class, we will focus primarily on sociolinguistics. This is how language is used in society, both our society and others. Gender differences in communication, cultural differences in communication, and language as an instrument of social power are some of the concepts with which sociolinguistics is concerned.

Our course has several general objectives. By the end of the course, you should be able to:
• provide a linguistic definition of language
• explain basic differences in the general communication styles of men and women
• identify language biases related to gender
• explain advantages and limitations of nonverbal communication
• define connotation and denotation
• analyze the roles slang, euphemism, and taboo play in language
• discuss and analyze current attitudes toward language in our society
• apply course content to the subject of truth and lying in communication

To achieve these objectives we will use a variety of approaches, although a majority of our discussions will involve our observations of language at work around us. You will be expected to become careful observers of the way people, including yourself, communicate.
